How to Approach a Loved One When You Notice Changes
1
Observe and Document
Discreetly observe changes: note what you notice (e.g., frequent forgetfulness, difficulty following conversations).
Identify potential triggers: fatigue, stress, medication, or recent events that could explain these behaviors.
2
Get Informed
Educate yourself about the signs of cognitive issues.
3
Approach with Empathy and Offer Solutions
Choose the right moment: Find a calm, one-on-one moment where you won’t be interrupted, preferably in a place where your loved one feels safe and comfortable.
Be kind and empathetic:
- Use a calm, non-accusatory tone.
- Avoid blaming or pointing fingers about the behaviors you’ve noticed.
Focus on facts and your concerns, not judgments:
- Highlight your concern for their well-being.
- Share concrete, recent examples of what you’ve observed.
Listen actively without confrontation:
- Let your loved one express themselves without rushing them.
- Show active listening by rephrasing what they share.
- If they deny, react negatively, or provide excuses, stay calm.
- Reassure them that you are there to help and that there is no shame in addressing these concerns.
Propose non-intimidating, practical solutions: Suggest a simple consultation or memory workshop (without directly mentioning “tests” or “illness.”)
- Talk about a medical consultation in a reassuring way.
- Highlight the benefits of early intervention without insisting if they resist.
4
Stay Patient and Available
Awareness can be a lengthy process. Reassure your loved one and give them time to reflect.
Explain that this step is a way to ensure everything is okay and to get clear answers.
What to Expect During the First Appointment
Memory Troubles Analysis: We will determine whether your memory issues are linked to normal aging or to potential risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease. We will also offer practical solutions or resources to improve your lifestyle or address other causes of memory issues.
Observation of Anomalies: If we detect something that doesn’t align with normal aging, we may suspect a neurocognitive disorder. However, a diagnosis will not be made immediately. In such cases, we may explore the option of participating in our clinical trials.
No Immediate Diagnosis: During the first visit, no definitive diagnosis or conclusions will be made. For example, we won’t determine if you have Alzheimer’s disease. Thus, there’s no “commitment” or immediate consequence to attending, and no impact on your daily life unless we determine that your safety or that of others is at risk.
All our services are confidential and offered at no cost. You do not need a referral from your doctor to visit us.
