Dementia prevention needs a gender lens

The 2024 Lancet Commission highlights 14 modifiable risk factors for dementia, but not all risks are equal across populations. Women not only face a higher lifetime risk of Alzheimer’s, but also experience greater cognitive impact from factors like diabetes, depression, poor sleep, and low education.

In fact, many of these risk factors are more common in women globally, especially in underserved communities. It’s time to build dementia risk models that reflect real-world diversity, across gender, geography, and life course.
